Main Page
Welcome to Old Melbourne! The city of Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia, has a fantastically rich and vibrant history. Here at OldMelbourne.net.au, we’re busy creating a comprehensive database of knowledge, facts and resources to connect present-day Melbournians with that history, and with the city as it once was.
We’re always looking for people to give us a helping hand, whether it’s to share a heap of knowledge about a suburb, or to share a simple snippet about a person or place of Old Melbourne. Please feel free to register for an account and contribute to this exciting project.
About Old Melbourne
Many Melbournians, and those in other parts of the world, have a few tiny little pieces of the very large puzzle that is the history of Melbourne. Old Melbourne is an exciting project that will capture and record all of those pieces. By pulling together the volume of information, facts, photos and memorabilia that people hold in their heads, their garages, their family tree database and in books and newspapers, we will put together a comprehensive story about Melbourne in the years gone by. We will connect all Melbournians to the rich past of our great city: its suburbs, streets, events, organisations, businesses and residents.
OldMelbourne focuses primarily on the period of time before 1940, although we do include some relevant information after that period.
Current Status
As you’ll appreciate, Melbourne is a big place and its history in a very long and detailed story. We know that this project will take time to develop, but we also know that it will be a very valuable tool in the years to come. We’re currently completing a “proof of concept” for OldMelbourne, so we’re initially putting our focus on the suburb of Kew. Our efforts on telling the history of Kew will prove the value of the OldMelbourne wiki project, and will assist us in expanding the project to all of Melbourne.
How to contribute
Piecing together Melbourne’s history is an endless task and a very difficult one. We’d really appreciate any help you can provide.
